I moved with unnatural speed in a bid to get as far away from Stillsong as fast as possible. Beam kept asking questions I failed to answer as I led him back towards the Market Precinct. As we came to the bottom of a steep side street I made to rejoin the main thoroughfare leading back to the market plaza, but he pulled me back by the arm and turned me around to face him.

“So, what?” he said. “We’re just going to ride out of here in the middle of this?”

“Seems that way,” I eyed the tumult ahead of us. The pungent smell of smoke had returned to the air, and people were racing every which way along the main artery.

“They killed a woman? And Redwell…Rime killed him?” He glared at me.

“Redwell was about half a second away from sticking me in the chest with his glaive. He can rot in Murhid for all I care.”

“When Stillsong finds out…she-”

“…Will likely try and kill us all. Well, more specifically, Rime and I. Maybe she’ll let you off with abduction and forced indoctrination.” Beam’s diplomatic expression was somehow held in place as he weighed the situation.

“We must go, then,” he uttered. “If I am to believe you, Brother…then we have no other choice.”

“Believe me. I didn’t get this gash on my head from an ice skating accident,” I waved in the direction of the main road. “Let’s go.”

We joined onto the thoroughfare but saw immediately that a large building up ahead of us had caught fire. A bulging inferno was seeping out of the smashed front window, and a panicked crowd was rushing past to get out of the way. Two guards stood in front of the facade, spears in hand, hesitating as the chaos surrounding them proliferated.

We had no choice but to merge with the crushing crowd. I grabbed onto Beam’s coat as we pressed forward, fighting our way through until we gained enough space to split away onto a further side street.

Anarchy had gripped Yunti like a tightening noose. Still, the bells tolled on, and the exclamations of distressed men and women and children echoed around every corner. Eventually, we found our way back to the Market Plaza and rushed towards the river-adjacent street with the Flower on the Mountain on it. I tried to look into its darkened front window as we passed, but I couldn’t see through. Ginger’ll be okay, I thought. She had been careful. Shrewd.

The stables were about halfway down the street, which followed the river to the West Gate. We sprinted up to the barn entrance and I knocked on it fervidly.

“Rime. It’s Brume. It’s us,” I called to her. After a second, the gate came unbarred with a thunk and my aunt’s face appeared behind it.

“Seraphs. You found him,” she smiled. “Well done, lad.”

“Let’s mount up and get going,” I said, slinking past her. “If Stillsong gets to us…”

Beam followed me inside. There, Feather, Luster, and Hana were saddled up in a line. Luster gave a whinny as Beam placed his palm over her silver nose.
